A Newtown councillor has said he has been assured there will be improvement works along several main roads in Newtown once the town's bypass has been completed.

He has urged the council to create a new pedestrian crossing along Llanidloes Road as part of the improvements.

Councillor David Selby said he has received assurance from the Portfolio Holder for Highways at Powys County Council that there will be improvement works on Llanidloes Road, New Road and Pool Road.

The roads will be de-trunked once the bypass is opened. This means the county council will take over responsibly for the roads from the Welsh Government which operates trunk roads.
Cllr Selby said: “There is much outstanding maintenance that needs to be done when the roads become less busy. New signage will be required and some resurfacing.
“Most importantly I am urging the council to make improvements on Llanidloes Road to create a new pedestrian crossing and reduce the speed limit to 30mph to make the road safer.

"There could be an issue that when the amount of traffic is reduced the speed of the traffic increases. I am pleased that the Portfolio Holder has agreed that local Councillors will be involved in agreeing improvements.
“I want to see Llanidloes Road in particular becoming an improved safe route for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.  We must not lose this once in a lifetime opportunity to achieve that."
