Montgomeryshire has one of the slowest broadband speeds in the UK, new figures published by the House of Commons have revealed.

In the report, Montgomeryshire is in the top 10 constituencies in the UK with the slowest broadband, placed at joint fifth with Ceredigion.

Plaid Cymru said the situation was "not good enough."

The House of Commons Library report published yesterday highlights that Montgomeryshire is amongst the top ten constituencies in the UK with the highest proportion of lines unable to receive decent download speeds.

Local Plaid Cymru county councillor Elwyn Vaughan said: "It's simply not good enough. We constantly hear about having to do services on line, of banks closing in our towns and being forced to do on line banking, yet a substantial percentage of us are lacking in decent broadband speeds and accessibility.

"This continued deficiency undermines our rural economy and is a basic service need these days. Welsh Government must take this matter seriously and ensure that Mid Wales is a priority area in the new round of broadband infrastructure investment.

"Consideration should also be given to the opportunities to upgrade our infrastructure as part of the potential Mid Wales Growth deal. Ireland made a quantum leap forward a few years ago with substantial investment in IT infrastructure which led to economic growth; Wales needs to follow that example."

Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George has ben campaigning for better broadband in the area and said he was concerned at the number of "not spots" in the area that still cannot receive broadband after the completion of the Superfast Cymru Broadband programme.
