Newtown Town Council is increasing its budget by £107,821 - over 18 per cent - this year as it takes on more responsibilities, meaning council tax payers will have to stump up more.

The council today revealed its budget for 2018/19 will be £699,494, up from £591,474 last year.

And this is before Powys County Council, Dyfed Powys Police and the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirm their precepts, with the county council expected to increase its by at least five per cent.

The Newtown Town Council element of the Council Tax means a Band D property in the town will be paying £149.62 towards the council budget for the year, compared to £126.68 last year, which represents over 18% increase.

Cllr David Selby, Chair of the Council’s Resources Committee, said: "The major project for 2018/19 is bringing back control of the town’s river park lands from Powys County Council.

"Working with the Going Green For A Living Community Land Trust, the town council will be responsible for the upkeep of the river park lands from 1st April, once agreement has been reached with Powys County Council.

"£47,000 will be spent next year on this project. The town council awaits the outcome of the £1.1M lottery bid for other improvements to the land. The town council will also start work on a major improvement of the play area in the park. Town Centre flower beds will also be improved and repairs made to Town Council owned and operated buildings.”

He added: "No one likes an increase - but a lot is being achieved for a relatively small weekly charge. The Town Council seeks to maintain and improve services in our town and work with others to make Newtown a great place for residents and visitors.”

Newtown Town Council is responsible for the town’s food festival and winter festival including the Christmas lights, for developing tourism in the town, the two toilet blocks, Northside Hall, Sarah the Community Grants and the Tourism Grants. The Town Council also financially Brisco House,
supports the Citizens Advice Newtown Project.
