Plans to move Newtown’s waste recycling centre to a new site in the town, with Powys County Council taking ownership of it, has moved forward.
The county council wants to build a new centre on the Dyffryn Industrial Estate along Pool Road, moving it from the currently privately owned and operated site at Wern Ddu Lane.
The council revealed last year that it wanted to operate all its recycling sites in the county.
It has submitted a planning application for the new centre which will see the current one, owned and operated by Potters Recycling, close.
The council has purchased the site with assistance from the Welsh Government.
“The site will be part of the council’s plans to secure the long-term future of the county’s household waste recycling centres. The recycling centres in Brecon, Llandrindod and Ystradgynlais are owned by the council, with the current sites in Newtown and Welshpool privately owned,” said a council statement.
Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling, said “This investment is part of our long-term plan to secure strategic recycling and waste facilities across the county to provide the infrastructure for us to meet the Welsh Government’s ambitious target to recycle at least 70 per cent of waste by 2025.”
The application can be viewed online at www.powys.gov.uk by going to the planning and building control page.
