A local Powys county councillor will this week ask his colleagues to back proposals to make St David's Day a national holiday.

Cllr Elwyn Vaughan will propose the move to make 1 March a Bank Holiday at a full county council meeting on Thursday, seconded by Cllr Bryn Davies. He wants the council to support a national campaigning seeking the national holiday.

He has also urged the county council to raise the Welsh flag on all county council buildings, including those in Newtown, on 1 March.

His motion states: "That the council supports the cross-party call for St David’s Day to become a national bank holiday.

"In the meantime, that the council recognises this by raising the flag of St David on the Council’s sites together with the Welsh flag during the week around the 1st of March, and also to raise the Glynd?r flag during the week which includes the 16th of September."
