Plans for a national football museum for Wales in Newtown are moving forward as businesses and local groups show their support.

Last week it emerged that Newtown Town Council was supporting the proposal to establish the museum in the town, close to Latham Park, the home of Newtown AFC.

The council had written a letter in support of the move that has been put forward by a consortium of businesses and will involve a 121 acre site that includes the current football ground.

Since the scheme became public, a number of sporting groups and individuals have expressed their support for the plans that would put Newtown once again on the sporting map.

The town council believes the move could form part of the Mid Wales Growth Deal that has been put forward by the Wales Office to invest significant funds into the region to create more employment and prosperity.

So far, the Welsh Government has said it supports the growth deal “in principal.”

Newtown has a strong affinity with Welsh football and has helped nurture hundreds of footballers over the decades, as well as being home to its own academy.

The consortium of businesses wants to apply for £1.1million of Big Lottery funding for the scheme.
