A campaign to stop retailers using "wasteful" plastic packaging is to target Newtown's Tesco store next month.

The Plastic Free Powys campaign wants retailers to stop using what it believes is wasteful plastic packaging on products ranging from fruit and veg to dairy products and other items.

It has already targeted the town's Morrisons store and group members say they will now target the Tesco store in Pool Road on 10 February.

Powys county councillor Elwyn Vaughan is one of those involved in the campaign. "We are a group of normal, local people sick of dealing with plastic packaging. It is harmful. It takes up our time and our resources and it is not necessary," he said.

"We will be at the Tesco store to show how such packaging is wasteful and how most products simply do not need such packaging."

The group is lobbying the Welsh Government to introduce legislation that reduces the amount of packaging used by retailers. Wales was the first part of the UK to introduce a charge for plastic bags.
