More than 236 gift parcels have been handed out to children and families in the Newtown area during the Christmas period by the Salvation Army, it has been announced.

The parcels were part of donations from local people as part of the charity's annual Christmas Toy and Tins Appeal during December.

"As a result of the generosity of the people of Newtown, and the surrounding area, and the marvellous received by our hard-working volunteers we were able to deliver 236 gift parcels to children and families in this area," said Nicola Wain, Community Development Worker at the local Salvation Army corps.

"We would also like to thank the public for their generous donations to the Newtown food bank over the Christmas period.  We were able to help 110 families with Christmas food hampers, we couldn’t have done this without you!

We are sure that your donations helped to brighten up many lives this Christmas."
