Treacherous conditions as snow hits area

10/12/2017 @ 09:19

Police are urging people not to drive today in and around Newtown unless necessary after a heavy snow overnight which is set to continue throughout today.

The Met Office has issued an Amber weather warning and emergency services have already had to deal with a number of incidents.

Most roads in the area are described as "treacherous" with many of the B and minor road impassable in places surrounding the town.

The message from police is to stay off the roads.

They said: "We're getting numerous reports of very heavy snow across our force area. Local authorities have been out gritting overnight but the snow is heavy and sticking to roads. Please take care and consider if any journey is really necessary."

The A483 between Welshpool and Shrewsbury has been closed for several hours after a telegraph pole fell over the road and this morning a tanker became stuck on the Trewern railway bridge.

Other roads in the area are also closed or impassable.

Charities have already urged residents to check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours and friends as the cold weather continues.
