Newtown’s Morrisons supermarket is to be targeted by anti-plastic campaigners.

A group of Powys residents has begun a campaign to get retailers to reduce the amount of plastic they use for packaging.

Plastic Free Powys is to target major retail chains as part of its campaign.

Local Powys county councillor Elwyn Vaughan is one of those involved in the new group.

“We will also be putting motions to the council to lessen plastic use and waste and to pressurise the Welsh government to introduce the plastic bottle tax,” said Cllr Vaughan.

The group was launched last week and says it will be visiting Morrisons in Newtown shortly to highlight the amount of “wasteful” plastic packaging.

They aim to highlight to the stores and shoppers how wrappers and other materials are not needed in many cases.

The group states: “We are a group of normal, local people sick of dealing with plastic packaging.

“It is harmful. It takes up our time and our resources and it is not necessary.”
