River flood levels have prompted Network Rail chiefs to close the Cambrian Railway between Newtown and Machynlleth.

Bus services are now operating between the two towns until further notice, including Caersws railway station.

A spokesperson for Arriva Trains Wales which operates services on the line, said: "Network Rail report that the Afon Twymyn/RiverTwymyn is in flood and has risen to dangerous levels. This has affected the rail bridge at Glyntwymyn, also known as Black Bridge.

"As a safety consequence, the line has been closed until river levels drop to safe levels. There is no time estimate for reopening the line.

"Replacement road transport services are conveying passengers between Machynlleth and Newtown Powys via Caersws in both directions until further notice. Lloyds Coaches (Machynlleth) will operate a shuttle service between Machynlleth and Newtown.

"Road vehicle numbers are limited until prior commitments (e.g. school runs) are completed)."
