New lights and features will be shown in their full glory at the official switch on of Newtown's Christmas lights next Friday.

The town council has invested in new lights which will be on show for the first time this year, it has said.

The Kicking Off Christmas event takes place between 5pm and 8pm in the town centre on Friday.

"There will be school choirs singing in Welsh and English from 5pm, a competition to find Olaf and Disney princesses hiding in local shops, charity stalls in Bear Lanes, Tony Rowley compering and providing music, and of course Newtown’s very own silver band leading the procession from the Town Hall gates at 6.40pm as we follow Santa's float round to Bear Lanes, Broad Street," said Two Clerk, Ed Humphreys.

Light switch on is at 7pm, with Santa, the Mayor, Carnival Queen, and Miss Powys on the balcony at the Bear Lanes shopping centre in Broad Street.

After festive Christmas carols around the tree, ‘Zu Ariel’ will performing on High Street until 8pm.  Local cafes and businesses are staying open to join in with the buzz, for a chance to do some late-night Christmas shopping and to serve you hot drinks and refreshments so a big thanks to them.

To continue the festival, Santa's Grotto will be at Rush Fancy Dress, Severn Street on December 2nd, 9th and 16th from 11am to 2pm (entry £2 per child, present included).

Deputy Mayor Town Councillor Susan Hill said, “A big thanks to Cheryl Griffiths for hosting the grotto for us.

“Once again the town council, traders and volunteers have worked hard in a joint effort to prepare for Kicking Off Christmas, and to try to make it a special time of year for all.  It’s been quite an investment in new lights and an enormous effort by all the organisers.

"We are grateful to everyone who helps, so a big thanks to the organising committee, volunteers and traders who make this a special event.  See you there."
