A man wearing a black wig and claiming to staff he was "waiting for his daddy" and they were invading his space has walked out of a Newtown shop after stealing an item.

Police said the incident happened on Wednesday at an unnamed shop in Newtown.

"A male approximately 6ft 2ins, approximately 40 years old, with a large build and most distinctively wearing a black wig, entered a store in Newtown. He acted in a strange manner to distract staff claiming he was “waiting for their daddy” and invading their personal space. He then was able to steal an item from the shop and make good their escape," said PC Can Harris.

He said they were making the theft public to alert other retailers in the area in case the man attempted to do the same thing.  "If such a  person does enter your store they may be attempting to steal, please contact 101 or  999 for us to attend," added PC Harris.

Anyone who might have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the town centre area on Wednesday or has information about the incident is asked to contact Newtown Police by telephoning 101.
