It’s all action in Newtown tomorrow (Friday) when the Wales Rally GB hits the town and the area.

No fewer than 79 international crews are set to tackle the challenging event, accompanied by 81 further competitors on the supporting WRGB National Rally, who will tackle the famous local Hafren and Sweet Lamb stages near Llanidloes.

The competitors will be in Newtown at around 1pm for a regroup and technical zone, with competitors entering and leaving the town centre.

The regroup will attract hundreds of spectators into the town to see the service teams working on the cars, driven by well known international rally stars.

Cllr Joy Jones said it was great to have an international event in the town. “We are so lucky to have this event in our town as brings a boost to our local economy,” said Cllr Jones.

She said that while there would be some disruption for people, it was great to have such an event in the town and Mid Wales.

“It does disrupt the town for a few hours and I know it irritates some people but there are benefits, it keeps Newtown on the map and it would be a really sad day if Newtown stopped welcoming events here,” said Cllr Jones.

“If we stop encouraging events to use Newtown I know there are many other towns in Wales who will be only to happy to welcome them to their town.”

The event kicks off today in North Wales and continues over the weekend.
