Council leaders should reconsider their futures

21/10/2017 @ 10:11

Leaders of Powys County Council should consider their positions and step aside from the management of the new child care services following a damning report, according to a Newtown county councillor.

Cllr David Selby said that while those on the frontline of the service’s work protecting children had been praised in a critical report published this week into the county council's child services, there were questions to be answered about how such failings happened.

Councillor Selby called on the Council Leader and Chief Executive of the Council to review their positions.

He said: “The report criticising the operation of the Council’s Children’s Services was about the bad management of the service. There was praise for those working at the front line of the service but damming criticism of management failings.

“In particular  at the top level the problems were not recognised and good false reports not challenged. The Council has decided to work together with better scrutiny, an increased budget, and external expert support.

“This is all very welcome and all Councillors should pay their part in that. But to give confidence to families and front line staff the senior leaders of our Council should step aside from direct management of the new service.”
