Plans for £2.8m investment into a north Powys Welsh-medium primary school federation have been approved.
An application by Powys County Council’s cabinet to the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme for support for the federation, made up of Carno, Glantwymyn and Llanbrynmair, has been approved in principle.
Cabinet member for Schools, Councillor Myfanwy Alexander said: “This is an important further step towards giving the families of Carno the school they need. The federation of the three schools is a great success, showing the benefits of working together.
"Collaboration between schools will be the hallmark of education in Powys in the future and allows the Authority to invest not just in large town schools but in the village schools which serve our rural communities.”
The Cabinet submitted the application this summer after being told that the condition of buildings across the three sites were not adequate and that considerable investment was needed to bring them up to standard.
The £2.8m plans, which will be 50 per cent funded by the Welsh Government, will see mobile classrooms at Carno replaced with a permanent building adjacent to the village community centre. The replacement building will receive £500,000 funding from the Carno Recreation Association.
Work at Ysgol Glantwymyn will include a new disabled toilet facility, new administrative space to improve safeguarding and improved car parking and drop-off area. Ysgol Llanbrynmair will get a canopy for outside learning and additional storage facilities.
The federation has been operating since 2014 with a single governing body, it has a single leadership team and a new Headteacher and accommodates 157 pupils across three sites.
