More parking meters damaged

Two more of the new parking meters installed at Newtown car parks have ben damaged, it has emerged.

Yesterday, we reported how one was targeted in the Back Lane car park between Friday and Saturday in what police believe was an attempt to steal cash from it.

Now, it has emerged today that two more parking meters, only installed in the summer by Powys County Council, have also been damaged in a similar attack.

PC Nicola Hughes said the attacks took place between 4pm on Saturday and 7.30am today.

The meters were installed to allow motorists to use the new £1 coin.

Some motorists have already commented to MyNewtown that the new machines could have used card card payment facilities instead of just cash as in other counties, which prevents thieves wanting to break into them.

"They've installed new machines which could have had car payment options installed. There's contactless payment now which most people use. If they were spending money on new machines, why to get with the times and include such options rather than having to pay for it as an add on later," said one message to MyNewtown.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact PC Hughes by telephoning 101.
