A Newtown couple have lost their appeal to avoid having their noisy cockerels gagged, and it has cost them £6,000 in the process.

Roy and Valerie Rylands, from Bwlch y Fridd, Newtown, had their appeal against a noise abatement order dismissed by Welshpool Magistrates who ordered the couple to pay the money towards the costs incurred by a Powys County Council investigation.

The case rose to national prominence after the couple’s neighbour, Roger Morgan, claimed that the 52 hens and five cockerels kept him awake at night, adding that it resembled a “police siren".

The case had cost Powys council £10,288, and Mr and Mrs Rylands were ordered to pay £6,000 towards it.
