A Newtown sex offender who was deported from Thailand has been jailed for breaching a community order and failing to comply with notification requirements around his Registered Sex Offender status.

David Mawtus, 51, was deported from Thailand following a 10 month investigation by Dyfed Powys Police.

Mawtus was charged with breaching a community order and failing to comply with notification requirements in relation to his RSO status.

National Probation Service reported Mawtus for failing to attend an appointment in November 2016, prompting a 10 month investigation resulting in his arrest on 6 September 2017.

Detective Inspector Adam Ellis, Dyfed-Powys Police, said: “This investigation and subsequent prison sentence should serve as a clear message to those who seek to evade justice. Dyfed-Powys Police will leave no stone unturned to bring criminals to justice, whether they attempt to hide in the UK or overseas.”

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police worked closely with the National Crime Agency, Foreign Commonwealth Office and authorities in Thailand to secure his return to the UK.

Mawtus appeared before Mold Crown Court where he was sentenced to 20 months in custody.
