A former Powys headteacher has been jailed for 10 years after he admitted child sex offences in the 1970s.

Gordon Fleming, 66, was jailed today at Swansea Crown Court after he admitted the offences at Aberystwyth Magistrates Court.

The court was told the offences were carried out in the Machynlleth area.

Mr Fleming, a former headteacher at Abermule Primary School, and who lived at Oswestry, had been warned of a long custodial sentence in April.

He had appeared before Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday, 25 April, and pleaded guilty to child sexual offences committed in the Powys area in the 1970s.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to further charges on Thursday, August 10th when he appeared at Swansea Crown Court.

The court had been told he was jailed in 1992 at Chester Crown Court for nine similar offences while a headteacher.

Chief Inspector Steve Davies, who led the investigation, said: “This is a significant custodial sentence passed down to a perpetrator of non-recent sexual offending. The sentence recognises the control and long-lasting harm caused to victims by an individual who betrayed his position of trust to sexually abuse children.

“I would like to thank all those who were affected for their courage in coming forward which led to the sentence today.”

“We continue to work with our partners to make sure the best level of support is given to survivors of sexual abuse.”

The safety, welfare and protection of vulnerable people is an absolute priority for Dyfed-Powys Police.

Anyone affected by abuse should not suffer in silence. Information and advice is available from:

Fleming pleaded guilty to a further 24 offences which took place when he was Head teacher at Castell Caereinion during the 1980’s.

Nicola Powell of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Gordon Fleming hid behind his reputation as a well-respected teacher for decades, exploiting his positions of trust within the education system.

“He used his authority to fulfil his own sexual gratification.

Following the sentence Ms Powell added: “Thanks to the bravery of his victims in speaking out about his actions, he has been shown to be a perpetrator of repeated sexual abuse, and has finally been brought to justice.”
