Road drain repair causes traffic chaos

Questions have been asked as to why repairs to a drain on a Newtown road were undertaken at peak rush hour today, causing traffic chaos.

Motorists were left queuing out of town into Llanidloes Road this morning as tailbacks formed along the road and to Nantoer Bridge where a road drain was being repaired.

It took many motorists 40 minutes to get from one end of town to the other between 7.30am and 8.30am.

MyNewtown received numerous messages about the congestion caused, asking why the work wasn't undertaken outside peak times.

Richard Davies messaged: "I thought it was the bypass work again, but once I'd got through town and saw two men working on a drain cover I just couldn't believe it. It was nearly 8am and we all know it's bad enough to drive through town then, so why do something then that could have been done at another time?"

Another reader wrote: "Did they really have to do this work? I thought it was something to do with the accident yesterday, but by the looks of it it had something to do with a manhole."

The A489 is managed by the North and Mid Wales trunk Road Agency on behalf of the Welsh Government.
