A Newtown man has been jailed for 14 years following an unprovoked attack in the town centre.

Alan Davies, 49, was convicted by a jury at Caernarfon Crown Court of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent near to the HSBC bank cash point last January.

His victim, Gareth Evans, 62, was left unconscious and with a leg broken in three places, the court was told.

Davies must serve two thirds of his sentence before being considered for parole.

The court was given a probation service report that said he had previous convictions for violence.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke said Davies presented a danger to the public.
