A Powys County Council service that carries out a crucial role investigating corporate fraud is expanding its operations into two English councils.

Powys County Council has won a three-year contract to provide corporate fraud services for Taunton Deane Borough Council and West Somerset Council.

Among the services provided will be fraud prevention, detection and where necessary prosecution against individuals and businesses who try to gain income or assets or reduce their liability to the councils that they are otherwise not entitled to.

Cllr Aled Davies, Deputy Leader of Powys County Council and portfolio holder for Business Services, said: “We are delighted to secure this contract which will not only generate income for the council but offer the services of our experienced team to others.

“Our Cabinet’s vision is for the council to be open and enterprising so it is important we are looking at many different options to trade, generate income and offer a wide variety of services and skills.”

Corporate fraud is one of the services offered as part of Heart of Wales Business Solutions (HWBS) - a new initiative which aims to commercialise the council by trading some of its products and services. This includes a range of professional services such as payroll, DBS, counter fraud, and how they can be viably traded with other private and public organisations.
