A councillor's plan to let the young people of Newtown be heard more when it comes to local issues has been backed by town councillors.

Cllr Richard Williams had urged colleagues on Newtown Town Council to back a motion for youth representation, as reported by MyNewtown last month.

Councillors have now backed the calls and passed a motion which states: "Council reaffirms its commitment to working with young people."

It could mean a panel being set up and young people able to discuss matters with the council that affect them.

Cllr Williams has been nominated the lead councillor to take forward the plan and will work with council officers to draft a youth policy which will be presented to a full council meeting for approval.

"I am delighted that the town council agreed to support engaging with young people in Newtown and approving the proposal of community youth representatives. The next step is to put together a plan for how the council will do this in practice and I hope to present it back to them at the earliest convenience for final approval," he said.
