Newtown should become a hub for electric car charging in Mid Wales, attracting visitors, commuters and holiday makers into the town, according to a town councillor.

Cllr Geoff Parsons will set out his idea at Monday’s town council meeting when he will present a motion to provide electric charging points in one of the town’s car park.

He will urge councillors to endorse his motion.

With an increase in electric and hybrid cars, and further growth expected, there has been criticism that the area lacks enough charging points to cater for those wanting to travel into or through the area.

In his motion, which he will put to councillors, Cllr Parsons states: “This council notes the potential for growth in numbers of electric vehicles, and the absence of charging points in Mid Wales, and is of the view that such points in the town centre may attract commuters/ holiday makers and tourists into town to charge cars, with potential economic benefit to the town through shopping or dining.

“This council therefore supports Cllr Geoff Parsons to investigate and set out a business case for the installation of electric vehicle charging points on one of the town car parks.”

Councillors will vote on whether to support the motion.
