Military veterans living in the area could soon get free access to Maldwyn Leisure Centre's gym and swimming pool, it has emerged.

It is understood Powys County Council is considering recognising the service of military veterans to society by offering the free access to leisure centres managed on behalf of the council by Freedom Leisure.

It would apply to any past serving army, naval or air force personnel.

The idea emerged after a county councillor asked a question at a recent council meting.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance said: “Investing in services and support for Veterans in Powys is an important part of the Armed Forces Covenant that Powys County Council has signed up to.

“I believe that offering a free swimming and gym membership scheme for our veterans will not only recognise their service but give opportunities to improve physical and mental well-being.

“Developing a scheme was part of Welsh Labour’s County Council election manifesto, Together for Powys, and I am really pleased that the Cabinet are taking our ideas on board.”
