Petitions with more than 30,000 local signatures have been handed in to the Welsh Assembly Government calling for a block on drastic health cuts that could put lives at risk.
Campaigning mum-of-three Helen Jervis, who has rallied mass local support over the past month, and local Assembly candidate for the Liberal Democrats, Wyn Williams, delivered a clear message to Christine Chapman AM, Chair of Petitions Committee, not to relocate vital women and child health facilities from Shrewsbury to Telford.
Recent public meetings in Welshpool, Newtown and Llanidloes attracted over 1,000 people and campaigners are calling on the Welsh Government to engage in the current consultation by the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust,.
Mr Williams said: “The public opposition is overwhelming. 30,000 people can’t be wrong! I want to make sure that the people’s voice is heard. That is why Helen and I have handed in this petition to the National Assembly Petitions Committee.
“The committee has now written to the Health Minister as a result of our petition and they will be meeting next week to discuss further action. I only hope that there is no hidden agenda by the Welsh Government to stop Welsh patients receiving health care in England.”
