Four people have been co-opted on to Newtown Town Council without an election after nobody stood for the seats at May's council elections.

The four have been co-opted, or appointed by councillors without being elected, after the town council issued an appeal last month.

It needed 16 members to ensure the council functioned properly, but only had 12 members after May's elections.

The council said Dianne Williams has been co-opted to represent the Llanllwchaiarn North Ward; Michael Jones to the Newtown Central Ward and Victoria Ruff-Cock and Rupert Taylor to Newtown East Ward.

Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys, said: "We were delighted to have so much interest in the four vacant seats on Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council. It shows the increasing importance of town and community councils in changing the local government environment."
