Lib Dem chief boosts health campaigners

09/03/2011 @ 02:11

Liberal Democrat Party President Tim Farron has boosted Montgomeryshire’s campaign to stop drastic health cuts that could cost lives.

Mr Farron was in the area to support local Lib Dem AM candidate Wyn Williams, and met with campaigning mums to discuss the ongoing campaign to stop maternity services moving from Shrewsbury to Telford.

He said: “My constituency, Westmorland and Lonsdale, is very rural and has similar problems with health care services. It is totally unacceptable for health bosses to think that they can just ignore the needs of rural areas.

“This is a really important issue. Clearly, local mums cannot afford to have this maternity unit moved to Telford.

“People power really can make the difference.”

Meanwhile, Mr Williams is presenting his maternity petition to the Welsh Assembly Government in Cardiff today (Wednesday).  He will be travel down with local campaigning mum Helen Jarvis.

He said: “I have gained thousands of signatures to my petition, and campaigning mums Helen and Sally Jones have also run their own petitions that have gained thousands more!

“The public response to this campaign has been immense and we have got to make the strength of feeling on this issue clear to the Assembly Government. Although we are presenting it today we will still carry on collecting signatures as it is vital that we keep up the pressure on this issue.
