Planners reject Vaynor development

The biggest housing estate in Powys will not be losing its last non-flooding open space after planners rejected a proposal to build six dwellings.

Residents were up-in-arms after plans were submitted to build on the open space on Vaynor which, campaigners say, has been earmarked for a community centre should it be developed.

And their complaints were upheld by Powys County Council who said the application would “reduce space considered of significant amenity value to the community”.

The decision has been welcomed by Town Mayor, Cllr Joy Jones (pictured on the site), who hailed it as a “victory for the people and common sense”.

“I am absolutely thrilled,” said Cllr Jones. “There was widespread objection to this application from the start and this is a victory for the people and common sense. Residents will also be reassured that the local authority has listened to them. We need more amenities for the estate and not to turn it into a concrete jungle. There will be a lot of happy people in Vaynor tonight!”

Powys County Council also said they were not happy with the development’s design which would have ‘hard-surfaced’ the majority of the area. They also had problems with the application’s parking outline and proposals for water drainage.
