Spend a penny to use the public toilets?

Public toilet users in Newtown could soon be asked to make a donation for using the toilet.

Newtown Town Council, which took over responsibility of the Back Lane and Gravel car park toilets, has invested in them over the past year and is now considering asking users to spend more than a penny using them.

The toilet at the Gravel car park used to be charged for by Powys County Council when it had an attendant.

On Monday night the town council's Services Committee is expected to ask officers to look into the cost of installing an honesty box.

"It's another idea to maximise the way we use our resources," said Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys. "We've invested in the refurbishment of the toilets and these are free to use. The idea is that they will still be free to use, but people who want to can donate some money each time they use them.

"Visitors to the town who use them will be asked to donate to a service provided by local people."

Users will not be forced to leave money, but Mr Humphreys said the council wanted to look at ways of raising income to help support the local services it was providing.

A report will be prepared before the full council decides on the next step.
