A review into the school crossing patrols in Newtown is to be considered.

Newtown Town Council saved and secured the lollipop patrols with funding at Park Street and Penygloddfa when the county council decided to stop funding several years ago.

But the town council wants to ensure the funding is being maximised and the review will look into other school sites in the town where no such patrols are operating.

Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys, told MyNewtown that no decision was being taken on the two existing school patrols, but a review was needed to see how the town council funding was being used and how it cold be maximised. He said the review would include why other schools in the town didn’t have such patrols.

He added the review would include consultation with schools in the town, as well as with Powys County Council’s Road Safety Officer.

Over the past year concern has been raised over the amount and speed of traffic using the Canal Road and Cambrian Way route into Commercial Street which passes the crossing to Penyglodfa School.

Members of the town council’s Services Committee will consider the matter on Monday and decide if to hold a review.
