Three town councillors have ben elected in the only contested town council seat in Newtown.

John Stephen Barker took 464 votes in the Newtown Llanllwchaiarn West seat and will be joined on the town council by Richard Thomas Williams (Ind) who took 325 votes and Ian Michael Childs (Labour) who took 258 votes.

With only three seats in the ward, Diane Gwendolyn Williams (Plaid Cymru) who took 224 votes, failed to be elected.

The election took place on Thursday with the count made yesterday.

It comes as the Conservatives took three of the five Powys County Council seats in the Newtown area, with the Liberal Democrats taking one and an independent taking the other.

Councillors elected to both the county council and town council face a tough year ahead with the county council having to continue to make savings, while the town council continues to consider what additional services it can take on for the local community.
