A decision on the future of council employees working from Ladywell House in Newtown has not been made, according to Powys County Council.

Yesterday, the council confirmed it had bought Ladywell House from the Welsh Government but said a decision on relocating staff from other offices to the prime site had not yet been made.

The council has previously said it was looking to consolidate its offices and depots as part of savings and speculation was that offices such as those at Welshpool would be closed, or reduced in size, and staff transferred to a single location in Newtown.

But today, the council said the purchase of Ladywell House was a commercial one and it would be investing in the property to modernise it and to cater for existing and new tenants that include the Welsh Government and some private sector companies.

A spokesperson said: “This is a commercial investment for the council and our immediate plans are to invest in the property over the next two years to ensure it is modernised and provides fit-for-purpose office accommodation for the current tenants and potential future commercial tenants. No decisions of the future use of the building have been made at this stage.”
