Meeting to decide on first Newtown Honorary Freeman

27/03/2017 @ 03:50

Town councillors are expected to hold a meeting next month to agree to the first Honorary Freeman of Newtown being awarded posthumously to the late David Pugh.

Mr Pugh, who passed away at the start of the year, is former town councillor, mayor and was the unofficial Newtown historian, with a wealth of knowledge of the town's past.

Last month the town council agreed to launch a Freeman of the Town scheme to acknowledge individuals who have made a positive impact on the local community. Cllr Richard White suggested Mr Pugh was presented with a the award posthumously for his community work over the years.

At tonight's (Monday) monthly town council meeting, councillors are expected to agree to a special meeting being held on 24 April to discuss and agree to it.

In addition to being a town councillor and mayor, Mr Pugh was also involved in a range of community groups and associations, including Newtown Civic Society and the Newtown History Group.
