A Newtown-based charity that helps people with learning disabilities in the area to have advocates is mounting a campaign to raise £600 to help recruit and train volunteers.

A Voice for You has teamed up with Localgiving to help raise the money, which will mean if someone gives £10, the charity will receive £20.

“We have teamed up with Localgiving to help us raise the £600 we need to recruit and train local volunteers,” said a spokesperson.

“This will cover the cost of producing training packs and the delivery of five training sessions covering disability awareness, understanding advocacy, communication, advocacy skills and understanding legislation and procedure."

The spokesperson added: “Having an advocate is very special for a person with a learning disability. Imagine only having contact with people who are paid to support you from day to day.

“Imagine, how marvellous it is then to have someone independent who choses to be there for you and make sure you are listened to and that your rights are defended. What a difference that makes.

“If anyone would like more details about our induction training which starts on Monday, 3 April, please contact us on 01686 629951. You could become part of our great team.”
