Work improving a footpath in part of Newtown has been completed as part of ongoing work to maintain and improve paths in the town.

Powys County Council’s Countryside Services team have carried out works to improve the safety of the footpath linking Hillside Avenue with Canal Road.

“The necessary work on the public footpath, between Hillside Avenue and Canal Road, saw an old rotten railing replaced, the surface upgraded and the visibility improved onto Canal Road,” said a council statement.

Funding for the work was provided through the Rights of Way Improvement Plan Grant, administered by Natural Resources Wales on behalf of the Welsh Government.

The works are part of a larger project by the council’s Countryside Services team to improve and maintain footpaths in the Newtown area and to encourage local people and visitors to go walking and enjoy the benefits of the beautiful Powys countryside.

Cllr John Powell, Cabinet Member for Countryside Services, said: “The importance of locally available public paths shouldn’t be underestimated. Our public rights of way network can play a vital role in maintaining the health and well-being of the people of Powys and is hugely beneficial to the local tourism economy.”
