Recycling centre to open just one day over weekends

24/02/2017 @ 06:08

Newtown’s waste and recycling centre will only open one day each weekend, it has emerged.

A Newtown Town Councillor has been told the centre at Wern Ddu Road operated by Potters on behalf of Powys County Council will open on one day over every weekend and two days in the week.

Cllr David Selby has received a reply to his questions regarding the reduced opening of the centre.

“Cllr John Powell Powys Cabinet Member for the Environment and Sustainability has confirmed to me that the Newtown Recycling centre will be open only one day at the weekend,” he said.

His reply states: “All sites will be open for one weekend day and two week days. Welshpool and Newtown will be open on different days so that there will be a site open in Montgomeryshire on six days of the week.

"We will inform the public shortly once we have finalised arrangements with the contractor. This will be publicised at the site, in the press and through social media.”

“To say that there will be a site open on six days a week is unhelpful and misleading.  To expect Newtown people to travel to Welshpool on one day at the weekend is wrong and as the Cabinet Member for Sustainability hardly a sensible environmental plan.” says David Selby

“I am pleased that hundreds of people have signed the petition against the reduction of opening days at Newtown Centre.  I intend to continue to campaign for more opening days and urge people to sign the petition.”
