Tesco has sent a clear message to shoppers that it will not be closing or selling its Newtown store.
The news comes as a second giant Montgomeryshire Tesco nears completion in Welshpool, and rumours have intensified that the county’s first was planning to leave Newtown after its lukewarm reception there. The latest talk centred around an alleged sale to Matalan.
While one in every eight pounds spent in Britain goes through the tills of Tesco, the supermarket giant has received a frosty local welcome with awful road problems caused by the development blighting the company’s image.
But Tesco has hit back today (Tuesday), saying that its multi-million pound investment will remain.
“I can confirm that the Newtown rumour is absolutely not true,” said a Tesco spokesperson.
Welshpool’s new store will open for business on March 14 but it too has been blighted by a local public relations hiccup following the chaos caused by a new one-way system it has funded.
However the company has been on a corporate responsibility exercise to improve its image within the community and earlier this week we confirmed that the new skate park in Newtown would be paid by Tesco.
