Mature drivers in Newtown are being given the opportunity to brush up on their road knowledge thanks to an informal workshop organised by Powys County Council.

The county council’s Road Safety Unit will be holding its Driver Theory Refresher workshop on Wednesday, 15 March in Welshpool between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

Aimed at drivers in the county aged 65 years and over, the two-hour classroom-based informal workshop will provide attendees a refresh of the Highway Code and driver licence requirements.

It will also cover topics including night-time driving, medicine and alcohol laws and personal safety behind the wheel.

Attendees will also be provided with details of a practical one-hour driving assessment if wanted.

Cllr John Brunt, Cabinet Member for Road Safety said: “Ensuring that our roads are safe for everyone is an important aim and our Road Safety Unit is at the forefront of many successful initiatives.  There has been a significant amount of work carried out by the unit to cut the number of collisions and casualties in Powys.

“We hope that this free workshop will help preserve and conserve valuable driving skills and make drivers more aware of what influences our driving, ultimately leading to a reduction in collisions and casualties in this vulnerable driving group.

“I would urge mature drivers to take advantage of this fantastic scheme, which really could be life-saving.”
