A scheme recognising residents who have made a significant contribution to Newtown is likely to be given the green light.

Town councillors have accepted a recommendation to draft a policy and procedure of Honorary Freeman of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn.

MyNewtown reported last week about the plans, including the possibility the late David Pugh, a well known historian and former town mayor, being awarded the position posthumously.

Cllr Pugh was laid to rest today and the town council, confirmed it was taking the idea forward, but “but it was agreed that it would not be appropriate to discuss awarding the honour until a proper Scheme is in place.”

The Mayor, Cllr Richard Edwards, Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sue Newham, Cllr Richard White and Cllr Phil Watkins will work with officers on preparing a draft scheme and report to the February meeting for approval.
