Newtown town councillors will this evening (Monday) decide whether to host an vent promoting their roles and the work of the town council in an attempt to drum up interest in people becoming a councillor.

With elections due to be held in May, Cllr Jeremy Thorpe will this evening propose a motion for the town council to host an event to attract more candidates.

His motion states: “This Council supports a proposal for the town council to promote and host a public event/meeting to allow residents of the town to find out more about the work of the council, with the aim of encouraging more residents of the town to consider standing in the town council elections in May.

With ongoing savings being made by Powys County Council as part of its cost-cutting measures, the role of town and community councils in Montgomeryshire will become more important as they take on a variety of roles likely to be abandoned by the county council, making it a more important authority within the community.

The council will vote on the motion at its meeting on Monday evening.
