Work on the Newtown bypass is on schedule and will make a big difference to the town once opened, that’s the message from the town mayor after a visit to work on the £57 million road scheme.

Cllr Richard Edwards and Cllr Sue Newham, chair of the town council’s economy and environment committee, were given a tour of the works by contractors.

“Newtown Bypass is progressing well” said the Mayor, Cllr Richard Edwards. “Newtown has been overlooked and had had to wait for many years for the bypass to be approved and work to begin on it. It took Ieuan Wyn Jones, when Minister for the Economy and Transport with the Welsh Government, to approve the project."

Cllr Edwards explained that the town council was already looking to the future and planning how to make the town attractive to visitors who come for both work and leisure.

One of the proposals is to transfer the open green and amenity land from Powys County Council to the Town council and upgrade it into a riverside park and events area. This would also allow the redevelopment of the current play park in the town centre into a premier play park.

Cllr Newham said: "My thanks to Nick Cleary for a fascinating visit. The way that Griffiths is overcoming the technical challenges of the bypass route is really impressive. It was interesting to see the parts of the site that you can't actually see from public roads and to recognise what tremendous progress has been made in less than a year." Cllr Edwards added “it was great to see the whole bypass route and I was interested to see that work has started on three of the major bridges”.

Nick Cleary Project Manager from Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd gave the councillors a guided tour of the site.

Nick explained that by this summer there will be up to 200 people working on the site, which is great news for the local economy.

“I am very happy to be able to show Councillors around the construction site of the A483 Newtown bypass, we are grateful for the support of this challenging project shown by the town council.”
