A Newtown health campaigner has welcomed the news that the UK Government is to step in over the debacle over health services in Shropshire that are affecting patients in Montgomeryshire.

Newtown county and town councillor Joy Jones welcomed the promise made by a UK Government Minister that NHS Future Fit has to take account of Mid Wales.

Cllr Joy Jones said: "In the House of Commons Health Minister David Mowat MP made clear that NHS Future Fit must take account of Mid Wales. Well, here in Montgomeryshire we are going to hold him to that promise."

Cllr Jones'  vow came in response to the House of Commons debate on A&E services in Shrewsbury and Telford, where Montgomeryshire MP, Glyn Davies made an impassioned plea along with other Mid Wales MPs  on behalf of residents.

Responding to their concerns, David Mowat MP said: "I agree with my Honourable Friend the Member for Montgomeryshire that we need to get this right for the people of Wales as well."

"But the UK Government fell short of bringing the prolonged debate to a swift conclusion and forcing the NHS Future Fit programme to deliver on their axed recommendation to consult on Shrewsbury becoming the new Emergency Centre. It now does not appear likely that consultation will start before May," added Cllr Jones.

"This has gone on too long. It's frustrating for residents and it's frustrating for staff."
