The new year is nearly upon us but if you’re planning to head into Newtown on Saturday night, remember there will be no fireworks this year.

While local pubs are expecting a roaring time, anyone wanting to see in 2017 and watch the annual fireworks at the strike of midnight will be disappointed.

As reported by MyNewtown a couple of weeks ago, the town council has had to pull the firework display after it said the supplier had raised the cost of the fireworks.

"Newtown Town Council Economy and Environment Committee informs, with regret, that the New Year’s Eve Fireworks scheduled for 00:00 on 1st January 2017 in Newtown have been cancelled due to late notification by the supplier of a very significant price increase. The committee is unable to meet such an increase in this time of financial constraint on local council budgets, and apologises for late cancellation of the event."

In response to the council's statement sent out by email, former mayor, Cllr Rina Clarke, wrote: "I'm sure the reason can't upset people and we're proving that we're prudent with their money and prioritising important expenditure."
