Mad Friday is upon us as hundreds of people leave work today, heading into Newtown town centre and outlaying village pubs for the annual festive occasion.

Police have already warned revellers to be on best behaviour or face tough action on any public nuisance or criminality as part of Dyfed Powys Police's Operation Santa campaign.

With many businesses closing today for the festive holidays, workers are expected into the pubs for last minute get togethers with colleagues before the afternoon and evening festivities begin.

"We're urging people to drink and be sensible," said a Dyfed Powys Police spokesperson. "We will not tolerate any anti social behaviour and officers will deal with this. We want people to enjoy the festive period, along with those who are trying to get on with their work and lives at the same time."

Tomorrow (Saturday) is also expected to be busy in town for Christmas Eve as last shoppers look for last minute festive gifts. Retailers are hoping for a bumper two days in the run up to Christmas Day.
