A group of Newtown primary school pupils have visited the local library to meet the cast of ‘Gangsta Granny’.

Pupils from Penygloddfa and Treowen primary schools joined cast members at Newtown Library for a question and answer session.

Many of the pupils had seen the production of Gangsta Granny which was performed by the Birmingham Stage Company at Newtown’s Hafren earlier in December.  The company visited Newtown Library in 2015 with their Horrible Histories production.

The Gangsta Granny production is an adaptation from the much-loved children’s book by the author and comic celebrity David Walliams.

Cllr Graham Brown, Powys County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Library Service, said: “To capture children’s enthusiasm and to channel that to develop enquiry is a fundamental element of learning. The link between the written word, its interpretation and then a stage performance is important for children to understand.

“I can only thank the library service, the schools involved, the cast members from Birmingham Stage Company and of course Theatre Hafren for cleverly developing this as a learning opportunity.”

Trish Thomas, the council’s Reader Development Librarian, said: ““We wanted to take the pupil’s learning experience and knowledge of the book that little bit further.

“The pupils were keen to find out from the cast how they went about adapting the writing to a stage performance, and the cast were very impressed with the intelligent questions and the way the pupils engaged with them.”

Penygloddfa Primary School teacher Tammy Crees said: “The pupils were already enthused by the performance from the day before and so this was a great idea to see and meet the cast members who played the characters and brought the story to life on the stage.”
