Newtown's annual New Year fireworks celebration has been cancelled.

Newtown Town Council has issued a statement saying the firework display planned as part of it's winter festival will not now happen after it claims a supplier increased its costs at the last minute.

"Newtown Town Council Economy and Environment Committee informs, with regret, that the New Year’s Eve Fireworks scheduled for 00:00 on 1st January 2017 in Newtown have been cancelled due to late notification by the supplier of a very significant price increase. The committee is unable to meet such an increase in this time of financial constraint on local council budgets, and apologises for late cancellation of the event."

In response to the council's statement sent out by email, former mayor, Cllr Rina Clarke, wrote: "I'm sure the reason can't upset people and we're proving that we're prudent with their money and prioritising important expenditure."
