Private funding needed for crisis centre

Private funding is needed to help support the Newtown-based Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre, according to MP Glyn Davies.

The centre, which serves the whole of Montgomeryshire, supports men, women and children who are experiencing or have been affected by domestic abuse.

It depends on funding from Powys County Council and voluntary support across the county. But Mr Davies, who visited the centre last week, has warned that the centre needs more funding to secure its future and has urged businesses in the area to consider sponsoring it.

"Unfortunately, the changing pressures and values of modern life are creating an increasing need for bodies whose objectives are to help deal with the consequences of family breakdown.

“We are fortunate to have based in Newtown the Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre, which I visited earlier this week. It does fantastic work helping men and women at a low point in their lives.

"The only way in which a charitable body working in such a complex and sensitive policy area can function is with external financial support. It's crucial that 'safe' properties are available for individuals who have nowhere else to turn in crisis, and that professional staff are trained to manage the trauma associated with family breakdown. It costs money to deliver an effective service.

"We know that the main long-term supporter of the Family Crisis Centre, Powys County Council, is under financial pressure. I hope that some private sector sponsors will help fund the Family Crisis Centre. It's not glamorous sponsorship, but its hugely important work that I hope some local business will consider helping."
