Businesses in Newtown are being warned they must be aware of their legal obligations for the waste and recycling that they produce or face being fined.
Three businesses in Powys have been issued with fixed penalty notices for failing to produce the relevant documentation showing that they have arrangements in place for the waste and recycling they produce. Each business received a £300 fixed penalty notice.
The fixed penalty notices were issued by the council’s trade waste and recycling team.
Cllr John Powell, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling, said: “Every business, organisation and charity must, by law, make sure that any waste/recycling produced during the course of their business is stored, transported and disposed of without harming the environment.
“Under the Environment Protection Act 1990, businesses are required to produce waste transfer notes to show who is collecting their waste and where it is being taken. These three businesses failed to produce the relevant documentation and they received a fixed penalty notice, which have been paid.
“This should act as a reminder to businesses across the county that they must have a trade waste and recycling agreement in place, that their waste is removed by a registered waste carrier and that they retain the waste transfer notes for two years. If businesses don’t comply then they face being issued with a fixed penalty notice or even prosecution.
“We are also reminding all businesses that they cannot use the domestic service for their trade waste and recycling. If they are caught using the household bins, boxes or bags for business waste they could be issued with a fixed penalty notice or face prosecution.
“Any business, organisation or charity that is unsure of the trade waste regulations should contact our trade waste and recycling team for advice.”
